RTE 1 LW is gone though the running cost was 1% of the top (overpaid) RTE presenters. The only Irish station with universal portable coverage on the island of Ireland, which also was received in Great Britain.
BBC R4 LW is to close this year (2024).
Internet is fragile and the Mobile version is expensive and poor coverage.
Satellite isn’t portable and is vulnerable to Solar Flares.
Tuning around tonight on LW on the longwire on the FTdx10 and DNR on, I get:
Iceland 189 kHz (weak but readable if I knew Icelandic).
BBC R4 198 kHz (perfect)
Poland 225 kHz (weak but readable if I knew Polish).
Algeria 252 kHz (Quite strong now that RTE 1 is gone, presumably Arabic).
See Wikipedia’s List of Longwave Broadcasters.
Bad interference at 153 kHz and 171 kHz. Using USB or LSB may help on a very stable radio. Older larger domestic transistor sets from 1964 to 1994 are frequently better than later sets. Also local shops have largely stopped selling decent radios, though they still are made, even with LW.
Maybe I should learn Polish.
